The third female employee resigns from Vero Beach Police Department this year and sends another scathing letter about Chief David Currey’s arrogance and ineptitude. City Manager and HR Director continue to do nothing

Dear Chief Currey,

I have received your letter which contained the amount you would like me to pay for my training with VBPD, and I will be sure to make monthly payments (enclosed is a check for my first payment).
I would like to take this opportunity to say that I find it interesting that while you are eager to hold me to this contract, you don’t hold yourself, or your administration to the vow that you made my family when I was sworn in; the vow that you would do everything in your power to make sure I made it home safely each day. As I’m sure you know, the SOLE reason I left VBPD was due to the glaring, and ignored, officer safety issues… due to a poorly trained, and poorly run, dispatch center. I am saddened that officer safety is not of higher priority for you and your administration. And if it hasn’t been said, Iet me be the first to say that adding an additional dispatch console will not even come close to resolving the safety issues that VBPD Officers face. The ill-trained dispatchers and inferior CAD system will certainly get one of your officers seriously injured, if not killed; and when that happens, I hope you know the weight of that will be on your shoulders.
It saddened me to leave VBPD, but I felt I was left no choice, because of the dangerous officer safety issues. I know I did my best to bring those issues to light. I, together with Crpl J. Brumley and Sgt C. Cox, made our best effort to try and inform you, and your administration, as to the seriousness of the safety issues. We suggested implementing more thorough training, to create change for a safer work environment. We even suggested a meeting between the departments so that we could better understand each other, and each other’s needs. Given that I have experience as a dispatcher for the 5th largest city in the nation, with extensive training, one would think you and your administration might have been open to utilizing my knowledge and training. But instead, we were met with stubborn denial; and an attitude of “we’ve always done it this way”. In my opinion, when leadership believes they are the smartest people in the room, and there’s nothing more for them to learn because they know everything, not only are they themselves in trouble, but the people who trust and follow them are in trouble as well.
My hope for this letter is that for the sake of my brothers in blue, you and your administration can set ego and arrogance aside, and truly address the perilous officer safety issues that you have allowed and continue to allow. God bless you, and may He protect my brothers as they are entrusting their lives to your leadership.

  1. She, like others was billed $2600 for leaving before her contract expired.
There are many officers here with decades of experience from other agencies and out of state. Administration refuses to tap into them due to their own arrogance and antiquated ways in many areas in the agency.
Therefore, they are willing to pay to leave early. Speaks volumes.
